It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of GertJan van Ommen. I admired the scientist and leader of a great Research institute in human genetics, his beautiful work on Duchenne with his dedication to translational research, and his efficient dedication for more than 20 years to the European Journal of Human Genetics, that was giving me a yearly occasion to meet him at the Editorial board meeting at ESHG.
GertJan was also a longtime friend, even though our occasions to meet outside of strictly business meetings where not so frequent. Since the late 80s, I enjoyed these occasions, where I could appreciate his humor and conversation, and our shared enthusiasm for human genetics. I remember some Human Gene Mapping meetings (notably an X chromosome one in beautiful Amalfi), or Human Genetic courses in Sestri Levante, with their very friendly atmosphere (and a memorous Cinque Terre walk where GertJan helped me carry my heavy bag that I had taken thinking I would work rather than follow the walk), and some more recent familial encounters, with Ria and my wife, at the Petite France in Strasbourg or a leisurely walking tour together in Berlin.
We will miss you GertJan. With my deepest sympathy and condolences to Ria.
