Chu will be remembered as an extremely creative and thoughtful scientist, able to seamlessly blend the biological questions he so passionately pursued with his broad background in biological principles and quantitative analysis. His contributions to the fields of microalgae and polar research are unquestioned, and are reflected in his outstanding international reputation and many awards and honors. But to us, his colleagues, Chu was much more than an outstanding scientist. He will be remembered as a warm and caring friend, and as a dedicated mentor who always gave credit to his “troops”. He will be remembered for his love of Korean drama, travel, good food and coffee, all best shared with the company of others. And for his gentle but sometimes very blunt humor. He will be remembered as a wonderful colleague who gave freely of his time, advice and expertise. And he will be remembered for serving the School and IMU with great distinction in many capacities, including his long tenure as the Dean of Postgraduate School.
