It is hard to imagine that this life force that touched so many lives is no longer with us. Our dear Aai passed away yesterday. She had been under Hospice care for the past month, and went very peacefully. She has finally joined her dear husband, our father, Dada. She will be missed by her four daughters and our husbands, her seven grandchildren and their spouses, and her four great-grandchildren, and her devoted companion of past 5 years Panchamaya.
Our Aai loved and lived her life to the fullest. Her passion for music and the performing arts drove her to direct plays and musicals, teach children and adults music, form bhajan groups, and perform at mandirs and festivals, organize concerts, and accompany visiting maestros on the harmonium. She and Dada were founding members of Marathi Kalamandal, a much needed organization to bring the cultural heritage of Maharashtra to the diaspora. She was an active board member of the Natyabharati that continues to perform Indian theater in the DC Area.
Her love for sports lasted through her lifetime. She was an athlete in school, played competitive badminton tying up the palloo of her sari, taught yoga, tennis and swimming, even to her grandchildren. She beat us regularly playing bridge, carom and rummy. She learned to use the computer when she was in her sixties, and stayed up with the world through YouTube and Indian newspapers online.
