An ode to a friend
Today you will be laid to rest,
But I will not be there to see where they inter your wisdom, humility and kindness
The world today is sick and we are cocooned in fear
But you decided to embark on this regal journey away from friends
No consultation
No consensus
Just an empty chair, a blank box on the zoom screen, a Whatsapp status frozen in time
I cannot begrudge God you worshipped with earnestness
They say He only takes the best and everything happens for a reason,
But what was the reason here?
To ensure media developed work you pioneered stalls?
To ensure our charts late into the night never happen?
To ensure no more Kilombero rice for me?
Was that the reason mate? That’s cruel!
The two of us could have perished in the heat of Dakar in that taxi accident in 2013,
Then there was no reason for our demise, there was work to do,
You emerged from the wreck unharmed but your left sandal vanished!
I broke an arm and you then played nurse, brother and father until I returned home safely,
Today I was looking at the nasty scar on my arm, a reminder of our work in media development, our friendship and your kind heart.
The thought of never seeing you again brings tears to my eyes,
And even more so, because all of this was such a surprise.
You often spoke about how you abhorred surprises.
How about this one mate? You threw a big one!
I will stop mourning now in order to celebrate your life,
I cannot measure your worth to existence. The decade of our friendship remains priceless
Every single life you touched, especially young women leaders you helped to mould, is testament to your worth while you were on this earth.
You will be missed Doc
Thank you for your friendship
And all the memories we hold dear.
It's was a privilege to have known you.
We were family, not just friend
