The first time I met Taylor we were both in Nairobi, and it was the night of Obama's first election. Horns were honking, a national holiday was called, and I went to a bar with friends to celebrate. Someone invited Taylor and said, 'He's American too. You guys will get along'. How right they were. Every single memory I have of Taylor is filled with his warmth, his kindness, his intelligence, his humour. He was, as I described him to my husband, the person you wished you could be on your very best day. He has been a driving force behind both the Thinking and Working Politically Community of Practice and the Doing Development Differently group, but in a way that always put the people he worked with in so many countries first, and never himself. Alina Rocha Menocal and I met with Taylor at lunchtime on the 5th of June, and my notes from our meeting include the following: 'Alina & Taylor - writing up after the meeting; struck by Taylor's gentle, intelligent inputs'. That says it all. He is so very missed, and my heart goes out to Sam, Eliza, Jasper and Felix.
