Ray not only was a superb scientist, he also supported young scientists in a unique way. When I was a young staff scientist in Professor Hausser’s group at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg, he hosted me as a visitor at Magdalen College, Oxford. In addition to spending considerable time with his group, and me he hosted me at dinner and in a reception with faculty and considerable amounts of splendid wine thereafter. At the end, I was surprised that a door provided direct access to my guest room, which was rather an apartment.
