Prof. Jandera (1944 – 2021) was an excellent analytical chemist with the research focus in separation techniques, mainly high-performance liquid chromatography. He was deeply interested in the study of principles of separation, retention mechanism, development, optimization, and application of methods for the analysis of various types of substances in the environment, food, and industrial products. His main achievements included the comprehensive theory of chromatography with programmed elution, and the development of new methods for the evaluation and characterization of columns for liquid chromatography. He was also engaged in microcolumn liquid chromatography techniques, particularly in the development of efficient monolithic capillary columns and two-dimensional liquid chromatography. His results were published in over 250 papers in scientific journals with more than 9000 citations and H-index 52. He also presented his research in numerous lectures at foreign universities and conferences and served as a member of numerous scientific committees at international symposia in the field of analytical separation. He received many awards for his scientific contribution, i.e., Tswett Foundation Award, AJP Martin Medal awarded by the UK Chromatographic Society, Hanuš Medal of the Czech Chemical Society, Commemorative Medal of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and of the University of Messina, Waksmundzki Award from Polish Academy of Sciences, Jaroslav Janák Medal awarded by the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences, Giorgio Nota Award, and Tswett & W. Nernst Award by the European Society of Separation Science.
