Olugbenga Olufemi Okunuga Esq. was born on the 24th of March, 1949 into the family of the late Emmanuel Soyemi Okunuga of Efiyan Quarters Odogbolu and the late Madam Bernice Arinola Okunuga (nee Oduwole) of Ubu Quarters, Odogbolu, popularly called 'Iya Alaso'.
Olugbenga was born into Elesi Royal family Ijebu Odogbolu, Ogun State, he was the fourth of eight children and the last from his mother. Olugbenga got married to the late Abosede (nee Ogunbekun) who also hailed from Aledo, Odogbolu in 1981 and their 42-year marriage was blessed with four children and many grandchildren.
Gbenga had his primary education at St. Paul's Anglican Primary School Odogbolu, Ogun State in the mid-1950s after which he attended, initially Odogbolu Grammar School but completed his Secondary school education at African Church Grammar School, Apata Ganga Ibadan where he was the school goalkeeper for many years. His Higher School education was at the prestigious Catholic secondary school - Loyola College, Agodi, Ibadan - where he distinguished himself in collegiate sports and academics.
Olugbenga was a sprinter who ran a race of 200m for Western Region of Nigeria at the first in Africa Olympic standard stadium- Liberty Station. He was also an anchor leg in a relay race also for Western Region of Nigeria under late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then Premier. He later travelled to England for further education at University of Wolverhampton, West-Midland, United Kingdom where he earned a B.Sc. in Computer/Data Science in the late 1970s becoming one of the Nigeria's foremost IT Specialists.
On completion of his tertiary education, he worked in England for some time. He was employed as a computer analyst/programmer at Chubbs Securities Limited, Willenhall West-Midland, UK. He then worked as a Computer System Analyst at Wolverhampton Borough Council, U.K. before returning home. On his return to Nigeria, he joined the UAC Group and rose through the ranks to become the Business System Manager . He was instrumental in the development of several I.T. programmes for the group especially UAC Foods. While there, he was also attached to the Management Information Systems Department of UAC International in London U.K. and Gailey & Roberts, Uniliver Kenya for many months. He became the Head of Information Technology & Communication at Tractor & Equipment (T&E) Limited (Now Mantrac) where he retired in 2002. He worked in Information Technology in his entire career which spanned over three decades. After retirement, he focused on his private business - Tripple O Ventures Limited.
Olugbenga was committed to his family and local church where he held the title of ‘Baba Ijo-Designate’ of Christ the King Church, Odogbolu. He was also a member of the Christian Morning Star Society, Bola Memorial Church, Abule Onigbgbo, Ikeja. He was a pillar of Ebi Erunkulu - Odogbolu, Okun-Owa & Aiyepe; Baba Egbe Arobayo Odogbolu; Patron March Club, Odogbolu; Patron Inner Foundation Club of Nigeria and a member of the Aspirant Club of Odogbolu
He was a cornerstone and the bridge that connected the family together. He loved sports and was a loyal Arsenal supporter till the end. He had a big heart, was generous to all and will be remembered for his easy going and calm nature.
He passed on after a brief illness on the 1st of June 2024. Our dear father will be missed by all, but we are comforted by the assurance that we will see him again.
