It was a shock to learn that Michael has passed away. It is unbelievable.
I have known Michael for a little bit more than three years. I was one of the persons from Cytiva that started having meetings with Michael even before Danaher finalized their acquisition of us. I was curious to get to know our new colleagues within Danaher Pall PASS, formerly competitors, now to work side by side. I am an open-minded person, and I found Michael to be too, and I liked him from the start. I also recognized the behavior of Michael combining deep engineering skills with business. I could see how proud Michael was, in what he had achieved over the years. One example was that when Michael worked from his home office during Covid, he had as a Teams meeting background a picture of a large filtration skid, one of his first own large projects with PASS. This picture draw attention to people when they saw it for the first time and Michael proudly and happily described the history.
I also had the sincere honor to be the first Cytiva Uppsala associate that Michael met in person. This is a special memory for me and of Michael. This happened in Zürich September 2020 during Covid times when we were to meet one large Asian customer visiting Europe for a new potential project. Michael was joined by Roland and Lutz. We had a nice friendly and joyful lunch before meeting the customer. Michael had developed a strong relationship with the customer through previous projects, which was very helpful for the meeting and another example of Michael’s skills, to develop and maintain business relationship with biopharma companies all over the world. After the meeting we had dinner which gave me even more time to get to know Michael better on a personal level. I remember that we were also carefully probing each other on a technical and business level to better understand differences in how we operated, being at the time in separate operating companies, and opportunities to learn.
When the world started to open again after Covid, I had the opportunity to meet Michael in person a couple of more times. Once in Dreieich were Michael hosted several colleagues from Uppsala visiting the PASS facility. Again, Michael was an excellent host and made sure we were all taken good care of. This meeting was during asparagus season, and I had mentioned that I like asparagus, so of course Michael made sure that asparagus would be on the dinner menu. Michael gave attention to both details as well as global overarching strategic matters. He cared for his colleagues, customers, and guests.
Then Michael came to visit us in Uppsala and we could show him our facilities and a bit of the town, same as he did for us in Dreieich. At this stage I felt we had a very good relationship as well as understanding of each other’s capabilities and a good foundation for continued collaboration in many dimensions. I looked forward to work more with Michael.
Covid hindered us to meet more frequent in person, but over the years I had several meetings per week in different forums with Michael.
Michael had so much knowledge, was a warm caring person, close to laugh and being social. He will be deeply missed, but my memories of him will always remain.
My thoughts and deepest condolences go to Michael’s wife and children, family and friends.
Thank you Michael for all you gave. Rest in peace.
