Michael had the enviable trait of being someone who was a magnet for fun and silliness. During our trip to Salou, we fulfilled every cliche of the awkward, gawkish teenagers on their first holiday away from their parents and went straight to the local Irish bar. Immediately, the bar owner and bar tenders gravitated towards Michael, making him the willing recipient of several shots and a not-so willing recipient of a new hair cut. Yep, Michael had his hair shaved by some Irish bar tenders in front of drunken revellers. In typical Michael fashion, he took it like a champ and won the love and respect of those Irish lads.
As well as being a gregarious, fun-loving guy, Michael was also quietly very, very kind and thoughtful. He would go out of his way to walk you home if it meant you got back safely and he would draw you in to the party if he felt you were on the periphery.
He really was one of the great ones and will be missed so much.
