When I first met Matthew I came in knowing that he was an important person. As I got to know him more, I came to learn that he was more than that - he was a mountain. A figure so tall that we all aspired to be like him.
At first this was imposing, but within minutes of meeting him, he showed his soft side. A side that not only made jokes and poked fun, but a person with the deepest of love and connection for those around him, especially his family.
I came to love this man as a father figure, one who I could call on to ask my most difficult questions - those about life. He pushed me in ways that made me better but was also able to care deeply about my well being and how to manage difficult situations.
I occasionally called Matthew my dad, and he was that. He showed me love, respect and deep empathy. He made me laugh and he and Barbara became my home. The place where I felt the most comfortable, accepted and cared for.
No amount of words could ever capture Matthew's essence. He will be sorely missed.
