Years ago, someone (Lee Curtis, I think) nicknamed Martin "The Rebel MC" and that's how I've thought of him ever since, though I only ever called him the shorthand version; "MC".
I first met MC some 34 years ago, when he moved from the (at that time) female dominated Education Department to lead the Team I was in, in the Transportation & Engineering Department.
Well I don’t know if he moved to get away from “nagging women”, but if he did, he was in for a shock because although (at that time) the Department was heavily male dominated, he’d managed to choose to work in the one all-female office – poor MC! Luckily, he proved to have plenty of character and was soon matching us in the banter stakes, though he clearly enjoyed playing the Henpecked Martyr role!
As others have said, he was very passionate about his work and was not afraid to stand up for others or what he believed in; even to his own cost. However, his main pride and passion was his family. I remember how nervous he was just before Liam was born and when he got “that ‘phone call”, him dashing out to witness his birth. Since then, he’s shared many stories and photos – his pride in his family was there for all to see.
I still can’t quite absorb the very sad news of his passing and admit I’ve shed a few tears. My heart goes out to his family, whose pain I hope will ease in time.
To you MC, I will not say Rest in Peace, as I think you’d be much happier arguing with St Peter about the rules of admission through those Pearly Gates; so I hope you enjoy a jolly good, amicable (as always) “discussion”.
PS. If you’re still there when I arrive, you know you’ll have to concoct a pretty good argument to convince St Peter to let me in!!
