I don’t think Kevan quite knew what to make of me when I ended up in his division. Here was a west Londoner who wouldn’t shut up about (and try and explain everything in relation to) fresh fruit and veg who also viewed the expense policy as a target rather than a guide.
However he knew we could chat about music and food - which we did several times - and nowhere more appropriate than at the ace cafe. I’ll admit it wasn’t very “me” at first glance but Kevan assured me it was much better than My face was giving away (and it was!) He was desperate to persuade me that there was more to music than R.E.M. and I was telling him that, while a valid point, it was wrong. Especially when he was shoehorning some Bowie in at any chance.
When I think back to our chats, two things stand out - honesty and family (which always seemed his grounding). 2018 wasn’t an easy year for a number of reasons but he took me aside at the half way point of the lifestyle Xmas party (he was about to head home, some of the division were chasing a bag thief through Covent Garden and Jon was firing up the jaeger train) and he told me of his plans to actually retire in 2019 (a terribly kept secret!) but that it was about not only having time but importance of quality time rather than wasting it. I think that’s a great lesson that resonated with what I was going through and will take forward.
Go well Kevan and enjoy the music :)
