John was a great colleague and always a pleasure to meet and he always left me feeling better about things. His contribution to public health and in particular influenza surveillance was enormous and beyond measurable. He will be greatly missed by all of the influenza community both scientifically but more importantly on a personal level. As we say in Ireland "Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann”, meaning there will never be the likes of him again. RIP John.
