I am so deeply saddened by sudden loss of a dear friend, colleague, scientist, collaborator and above all a great human with sense of humor! I had known John since my PhD studies in 2009. I first met him at WHO Euro Influenza Surveillance meetings. He was so kind, humble, and supportive you wished he was your advisor. You could spot him immediately in any meeting as he was so tall! We started collaborating on several influenza projects which allowed us to exchange not only about science but also about cultures, music and philosophy. I saw how much he suffered when Dineke had health issues, I got to know his family values then.
He was so excited when he came to us with a new idea “Meral, I met this guy at this meeting he has crazy ideas about influenza, maybe we can collaborate with him…” You left a big hole in our hearts John, we will miss you dearly. I am sure we will meet somewhere and keep working on Influenza. Rest well until then!
