Dr. Hawa Abdi dedicated her life to protecting the lives, health and rights of Somali women and children, committed in every moment to serving others. Dr. Hawa become Somalia's first female gynecologist, and opened a clinic on her own family's ancestral land - offering free healthcare to every neighbor that came to her door. When the Somali Civil War broke out in 1991, institutions crumbled and over one million citizens became internally displaced, Dr. Hawa was there to answer the call. Dr. Hawa used her land as a safe haven for so many, quickly going from a clinic to a hospital, school and refugee camp for over 90,000 internally displaced people in Somalia. Her work became globally recognized and in 2012, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Beyond her extraordinary heroism and commitment to caring for her people when they needed it most, Dr. Hawa was a calm and courageous force, who never retreated from seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Despite war, intimidation and even a kidnapping - Dr. Hawa never failed to offer support; to heal, teach and protect the women and children in her care.
