Hari, was a hero. My earliest memory of him was when was running in the 4x400 meter relay in school and Hari who was the last relay runner overtaking the other guy and as a showman that he is, he was making funny gestures as he crossed the other guy and won the race. This was forever etched into my mind... Hari was always a showman, always larger than life.
Later he used to visit his cousins building near my house when he was in college, again I remember all the fantastic stories of college violence he talked about( he used to have a metal rod in his car...the fiat "Impala"), me and my buddies kind of understood Hari likes to weave a tall tale but he told it in such a fun way we enjoyed it. He used to promise that one day he will bring a cricket mat, nets and even an umpire for us to play our gully cricket.
Before coca cola cans were sold in India, he used to have one in his Impala (just that it was refilled with Thumps Up).
When me and my buddies talk of those days, Hari is always remembered as an iconic character. When I told my parents about his sad demise, my mom who has never met Hari said, " he was your hero".
That really captures what he meant to me and my buddies, Hari the Hero. It must be at least 20 years since I met him last... But he does leave one impressed.
