I became closely acquainted with Geoff a couple of years after joining the Manchester Referees Society in 2005 when we were 'researching' an IT solution for our then cumbersome appointments process - although that work came to nought it did lay the foundation for what is a truly streamlined process today.
Appointments were by committee and monthly meetings at Whelley Labour Club (yes we certainly knew how to live in those days). These meetings were detailed and laborious but made worthwhile by the fresh Wigan pies plied the committee by redoubtable resident of the parish and another Society stalwart, Colin Durkin (a contemporary of Geoff); Geoff remained actively involved with Appointments and Re-appointments until 2020 - another example of his selfless service and administration to the Society.
A gentle, unimposing person who always had time for each and every member yet he possessed a covert and sharp humour, making quips during conversation that often went unnoticed by many not attuned to his wry asides. Always willing to put on a pair of boots at short notice he was the go-to guy at 11.15 on a Sunday morning.
A great and very sad loss to the Society, I will miss our frequent chats, his sound advice and good company.
