Prof. Gabriel “Gabi” Popescu was a cherished scientist, mentor, educator, friend, and father of two.
He was the William L. Everitt Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Gabi was a prolific scientist, publishing almost 200 papers, 32 patents, and 2 textbooks since starting his lab in 2007. He transformed the field of label-free microscopy both academically and by commercializing technology through founding a company (PhiOptics). He has mentored and taught many PhD students and postdocs who have gone on to their own successful careers and continued to receive support from Gabi long after leaving Illinois. His loss is unmeasurable for his family, friends, mentees and to the entire optics and photonics research community.
Gabi is survived by his wife, Catherine Best, a research assistant professor in the Bioengineering department, his daughter Sophia Popescu, 15, his son Sorin Popescu, 13, and his mother, Maria Popescu.
