Dennis was an old friend and we were hoping to get together again in late March but were unable to due to the lockdown. I knew he was currently receiving treatment in hospital but it was a shock and very upsetting to hear the sad news. He was a gentleman and was loved by all who knew him. He was a great character who had a dry sense of humour, (le joie de vie as he called it) and lived life to the full though he had a strong competitive edge. My early memory of him was when we used to enjoy a game of badminton after work. On one occasion, while I was playing against him in a doubles match, his competitive edge seemed to get the better of him and I noticed he kept muttering to his doubles partner, Gerry. I was happily enjoying the game unaware that I was winding him up until he couldn’t contain himself and blurted ‘’what’s he smiling at’’, ‘’he’s deliberately smiling to wind me up’’, ‘’bloody simpleton’’. We have been friends ever since and he will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. Sorry I can’t come and pay my respects. Rest in peace old friend. God bless.
