Denis and I were D.Phil students at Oxford at much the same time. Even then he showed his ability for rigorous thinking and innovative ideas. His interests ranged widely like a true intellectual, yet he was always eager to test his theories and ideas empirically. He has left behind a corpus of fine papers and made a real contribution to psychology. Added to this was his wit, warmth.and kindness which touched so many people.
