David was an absolutely wonderful academic, and very supportive of me when I was starting out on my publishing career. He treated me with such kindness, and we went on to work together for over 20 years. The books became bigger and more international in focus, but always at their heart was the power of play and the importance of the early years. He was so erudite, but he wore his brilliance lightly, and always focused on his students and his teaching. I was truly privileged to work with him, and I will never forget him. Everyone at SAGE sends their deepest sympathies to his family.
