Dale Stanley Allen was born in Melbourne in 1942 to Mervyn Stanley Allen and Flora Elizabeth Anderson. Husband for a while, father for much longer, Dale had a range of varied hobbies, areas of expertise and interests. A classic car enthusiast, hot air balloonist, naturist, 3d photography hobbyist, watch collector, and avid film buff to name but a few. In his later years, he dedicated much of his time to education, being a member and eventually vice president of the Emerald chapter of the U3A including running and curating the regular Cinema Classics sessions. A raconteur of high order, Dale will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him. A bright spark with the wonderful ability to lift the spirits, make you think and bring laughter even in his final days.

Our Best Man by Marie Baxter. I met Dale in 1970, when he, and my husband to be Colin, were members of CHACA: The Classic and Historic Automobile Club of Australia. The club met monthly at Deepdene in the Balwyn area, and I attended as a guest. Dale impressed me from the onset, for his congenial manners and an eloquent speaking voice. He had the ability to confidently converse with an eclectic group of members from all walks of life, and through Dale, I made the acquaintance of “Smacka” Fitzgibbon and Steve Waddell, who were well known around town for their musical prowess. During the early 70’s, our friendship group attended regular CHACA meets at Kalorama, in the days when Dale owned a Packard with a “dickie - seat”, and Colin was in the process of restoring a 1939 Hillman with a running board. I think that we even once took the Packard on a road trip to Sydney, where we ultimately spent three eventful week-ends at the “Gazebo” in Kings Cross to attend Saturday night productions of “Hair which was the new very 70’s musical produced by Harry M Miller. Staying in the “Cross” was an experience in itself, whilst the brief, but confronting nudity finale, to one of Hair’s iconic numbers, pertinent to the ‘Make Love Not War” theme, was… Well! Back home in Melbourne, Dale organised novel outings to the Bene Bana Teppanyaki Restaurant, and to musical productions pioneered by his brother Derek, which were held at the Melbourne Town Hall. A memorable concert delivered by “Daddy Cool”, had us all bopping in the aisles to the Eagle Rock”, whilst another concert first introduced me to synthesised music akin to Rick Wakeman’s “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” and “The Six Wives of Henry VIII”. What a great time we all had! Needless to say, when Colin and I married in August 1972, Dale was Our Best Man, chosen for his eloquence (with a few dry puns thrown in for good measure). Once married, we continued to keep in touch with Dale, and in 1973, Dale, and one of my new teaching friends Carmel, were singularly invited to a party held at our Wellington Road townhouse. What happened next is Carmel’s story. Dale, Carmel and I continued to remain friends and keep in contact, especially after Dale and Carmel built their first home around the corner, and I had the honour of being little Sara-Jane’s Godmother. Over the years, Dale and I have kept in touch via birthday and Christmas cards, and I was on the “Poxy Roxy” mailing list, although I never attended. In more recent years, Dale and I had two or three meals together; reflecting on 55 years of memories. Who would have thought that life would take its toll so soon. Vale my dear friend. You will always be fondly remembered.
