Cheryl Lynn Meggs was feisty, witty and family-oriented. She enjoyed many years with her husband Rick Henderson, traveling cross-country and cruising the Caribbean Islands. She was a self-assured and creative freethinker who enjoyed cooking, playing cards and entertaining. She paved the way for advancement by female employees of the Illinois Department of Transportation. She will be missed by family members, friends and coworkers.

I met Cheryl and the rest of her crew in the student center of Circle Campus. I was invited by Cheryl to sit at their table. Instead of studying I would nurse my Dannon coffee flavored yogurt that utterly freaked out Cheryl. Her group was bid whisk players. When asked if I played I lied and proceeded to make all kind of mistakes. Instead of banishing me from the table she took me on as a tutee and patiently taught me the game. As a result that table of friends have held a special place in my life.

In 1966, I met Cheryl (and the rest of the family) through her sister, Laney. Our family was new on the block, and like most of the kids in the neighborhood, we gravitated to the Meggs' front porch. Unbeknownst to me, their home would become my home away from home. Cheryl embodied the welcoming light that lit their house. She was always friendly, straight forward and witty. When I think of her, right off the bat, I remember when she first started working for IDOT. My young mind was blown - a girl working with a highway crew! I had never seen it. From that point on, she impressed me as an independent woman with a mind of her own...which I should not have been surprised because all of the Meggs women had minds of their own. Not one of them ever fitted a single slot. I have stated this several times before, John and Joan Meggs did a wonderfully fantastic job raising their children. Cheryl will be missed, our memories of her will help to soothe the ache of her absence. But because she is special in God's sight, she has a secure place in heaven alongside her husband, parents, brother and other family who are with the Lord. Even though it has been several years since I've last seen her, my remembrances more than bridge the passage of time. In fact, as memories often do, they have a way of rushing the past forward to the present. My wonderful Meggs sister, I love you and know that you are living joyfully with the Lord.

I was blessed to know Cheryl through Sandra and Tina. My favorite memory was the 1st Christmas i spent with Rissa and the kids. Besides being soooo shocked of how many Christmas gifts I was given, the ultimate was when Cheryl gave me a card with money in it. She said she had won at the casino and totally decided to bless me! Listen i knew we would forever be best friends lol. I will totally miss her smoking every few minutes, her laugh, her conversation and simply her presence. My ideology of blessing others on Christmas has definitely been enhanced by the Meggs family! You are already missed but thank you for the beautiful memories that will live on!

Cheryl and I both worked at IDOT. We met in 1979 on the Lake Shore Drive project wher3e we working on adjacent sections of the project. We worked together for many years. She was a great person to work with. Very effective in all of her assignments. Over the years we became personal friends. We will all miss her.

Cheryl, although we were only one year apart, you were my role model. I followed your lead on everything. We hung together, laughed together and got into mischief together. I enjoyed all the fun times we shared together. I'm going to miss our phone calls, when we would reminisce about the old times we shared together. One of my fondest memories was learning to play bid whist at the University of Illinois Circle Campus. We really mastered that class. Thanks to you, Bid Whist Queen. Rest well and we shall meet again.

Like most of the other posts, I also have great memories of Cheryl's and Rick's many parties Cheryl always made delicious food and there was great music. I will miss the time we spent preparing for those events. I will also miss all the casino trips we made here in Vegas. Out of all the thousands of slots here Cheryl would always play the same machine . Sun and Moon. Now everytime I pass a Sun and Moon slot I will think of Cheryl. Love you and Miss you.

Cheryl was in charge of the kitchen AT.ALL.TIMES. She prepared all of our holiday meals, if by prepared you mean having her eight sisters do ALL of the chopping, fetching, and stirring. But the food would never have tasted like it did without Cheryl instructing us on exactly what to do. We will cherish every single future holiday because of her. But it will never, ever be the same.

Mannn Cheryl, I don’t even know what to say right now. We have soooo many memories, from you staying weeks at my house being bothering with my kids to me driving to Henderson every single day so we could go eat and go to the casino lol. You have always treated me like your daughter and for many reasons I have always considered you a second mom.... I’m still sitting here waiting for you to call to ask if I paid your bills or to order you some food lol. The memories we have together will last forever in my heart, but I can’t lie and say that I wish we could have a few more, especially with my wedding I was going to force you to come lol. My kids will always remember you and love you they were always sooo happy to see you! I’m going to miss you soooo much that it really does hurt..... I am so grateful to have you in my life the way I did and I will always honor you.... until we meet again

As a younger sister, I used to be so excited when Cheryl hosted card parties. Her friends seemed so happy to be around and everything felt so light-hearted and fun. I have to admit to having snuck a little of the spiked punch at these events which added even more to the fun.
