Tuesday Oct 17th 2017 will forever be remembered as the day we lost a dear friend and colleague. Carolina died in a tragic plane crash in the Brazilian Amazon when her plane rolled over while attempting to land on the Rio Negro, near Manaus. Carolina did not make it out of the plane. There are no words that can fully describe the empty feeling that we, all her friends and colleagues, are feeling today.
Carolina you were a shining star. A brave and gifted young woman with an incredibly strong will. When you put your mind to something, nothing could hold you back. You convinced celebrities and other influencers to join Greenpeace’s ranks, you brought in millions of euros from major donors and foundations to fund Greenpeace’s campaigns, and you created and lead a global community of skilled Greenpeace people that shared in the vision you created.
You were not the typical Greenpeace employee. You liked to work a gala party in a high fashion dress as much as you loved pulling up the oil covered anchor chains on one of our ships. You could give fashion orders to un-chic bosses and the next minute be advising campaigners on engagement strategies. You cared deeply for the wellbeing of our planet, but your entry point was always the people that inhabit this earth.
You were, most of all, an incredibly loving friend to so many of us. Always caring, always considerate. Bringing and buying gifts, giving a shoulder to lean on or an ear to be listened to. You brought the best of yourself to relationships, and in turn, brought the best out of those that knew you.
29 years is just too damn early to leave this place. It is incomprehensible. Carolina, you enriched Greenpeace and you enriched our lives. We are all better for having known you.
