Words cannot begin to express how utterly devasted I am for this loss.
Ben was a wonderful friend and neighbour who was one of the nicest people I had the honour of knowing. He was always smiling and joking around each time we met. I’ve known Ben for my entire life as we were next door neighbours and literally saw each other grow up from babies to kids to teenagers to young adults. I have warm memories of playing together on the street with the other neighbourhood kids, running around, yelling, laughing, riding our bikes, and just having wonderful kid adventures. I have fond memories of us hanging out as teenagers and young adults, pondering about what we would do in life and where we would go. We often went over to our family’s houses to eat meals and celebrate birthdays and special events.
In 2012, I was in Hong Kong on vacation and as I was walking along a busy street, I just happened to look to the right into a random restaurant window and at the same time, I saw Ben inside the restaurant lift his head and we made eye contact! We couldn’t believe our luck that we could bump into each other randomly in a huge metropolis like Hong Kong. We were laughing about this coincidence for a while. I fondly remember that trip and how we were able to do some sightseeing in Hong Kong together and see the city at night from the Peak Tram.
Each time we met, he was so kind and friendly. Even though we had periods of our lives where we didn’t see each other, when we did meet up, it was just like old times. I really loved his infectious laugh that lit up the room and made other people smile. I can’t believe this wonderful person was taken from this world so young. I am devasted by this loss and am incredibly sad that he didn’t have the opportunity to achieve more great things in his life. I will always remember Ben as one of my longest lifelong friends and always remember how warm and caring he was.
I hope he is at peace, wherever that may be.
