Tribute To Pioneer Ma -
I came into my Mums life as her 5th child, but with my 3 elder sisters being in Nigeria, I grew up being her eldest lass in the UK. During those early years she was based at hospitals in the Southwest at Woking & later in the Southeast areas of Dartford, Sittingbourne & Broadstairs in Kent County. Sometimes when one of the numerous films starring the actor Donald Pleasance came on TV, Mum would remark that she had met him as he had been a patient, treated at her hospital.
One of the memories she used to tease me about was how I - as a toddler, upon seeing flying helicopters in the sky, would run & twirl calling out "HELICOPTER - HELICOPTER!" Luckily I'd outgrown the twirling by the time I was actually using helicopters for work, flying out to offshore drilling rigs!
Our Ma was a complex and challenging character - "The Whole World Will Know!" she'd often declare with gusto, about infractions, transgressions, if poor behaviour was shown. This made a strong impression on a school-friend visiting one time as Mum was expounding thus! She, and her family, have now long-since adopted that phrase: "The Whole World Will Know!" regularly rings through their household - and neither her husband or daughter ever even met Mum! Ma's influence has extensive reach!
Yes – Mum really made an impression on folk. A geology classmate from Alabama, who only met Mum briefly was recalling how Mum informed her on Selma - more than she had hitherto known. She said that since then, she always thinks of Mum any time she hears about the place and that this past summer, she was working in Selma for the first time so was thinking of Mum then! Ma made lasting impressions!
Years after my euro-inter-railing excursion, I met up with with the Mother of one of my fellow-travellers while in Washington. I remember how his Mum told me that my Mum was a pioneer! Because of course that generation of women - that both she & my Mum were part of - surmounted mighty challenges, and she was aware of the further struggles - racial & cultural, that my Mum would have faced!
Mum loved her hymns and she enjoyed watching and joining in with her 'Songs Of Praise' programme. A prayerful woman, Mum was vociferous in proclaiming the power, protection and truth through God. Our Mum ever scripturally astute and dutiful, was also blessed with a radiance - very beautiful. Mum had an everlasting bloom, such that younger years were often presumed. Now she's moved on in glory to a higher plane - I'll hold on to the fond, the furious and the funny memories that remain.
Dear Mother - we humbly salute you. May our Matriarch be ever blessed. Rest in everlasting peace Ma!
