Professor Emmanuel Iyayi Unuabonah was a visionary leader, mentor, and scholar whose life was dedicated to human and capacity development. A devoted family man and a pillar of support to many, he nurtured and empowered countless young scientists, guiding them to excellence and international recognition. He championed scientific growth and mentorship, leaving a lasting imprint on African and global research and innovation. He fostered strong scientific communities, empowering the next generation of African scientists. His groundbreaking work in environmental and materials chemistry earned him global accolades. Still, his most incredible legacy remains the lives he touched, the futures he shaped, and the excellence he inspired.

My professor, my friend. Saying it was an honour to know you doesn't seem to be quite good enough when describing your person. You were a wonderful role model in all aspects. Your kindness to people was tremendous and your humility was exemplary, I thought I knew a bunch of your stories but when you left I heard so much more showcasing that fact, it was really proof that a high status and so many achievements doesn't have to cause pride. You were also very hardworking, detail oriented, you did extremely well with everything your hand found to do, you put in so much time and effort to the tasks at hand, this showed in your time as the Director of Academic planning and quality assurance, you were always on top of every situation, could spot things others won't notice and took great pains to ensure everything went smoothly, it was truly inspiring, anyone who stayed around you simply couldn't be lazy. Your professorship couldn't be disputed, a true academic scholar, the amount of research and commendations I've seen since you passed is so good, it's frightening, over 6,000 citations, you were truly a force, such a brilliant mind, your contributions to science won't be forgotten. A firm believer in Christ, it was easy to point at you and say you were a Christian, there were places in scripture I've read and it was easy to say that it's obvious Prof is living his life according to this, It's hard to imagine I'll never have those one on one conversations with you, your standpoint on things were so Christ like and when it was important you could make the most serious of situations seem so funny (prof is the only one I know who could explain a joke and it'll still be funny, how? I'm not sure, maybe it had something to do with how your smile and laugh always reached your eyes), I will miss the little tidbits of advice here and there, the playful jabs, those old quotes, especially the ones regarding "the sister". And a family man, ohhh, Prof loved his family, it was obvious, even the blind could see it, even in the little things that would make you go, wow, this man really cares for them. I'm sad I won't be seeing you for a while (because what's 7+ decades compared to eternity) yet I take comfort knowing you're with the Lord. My professor and my friend, I will miss you deeply. Goodnight.

The news of Professor Emmanuel Iyayi Unuabonah's death is still heart wrenching! He was a gentle soul, passionate about science and education, and always ready to mentor and share his insight. When I started the AREF Excell Programme at the University of Benin, Nigeria, he was the first person I contacted and he graciously agreed to co-facilitate the workshops with the UNIBEN Excell team. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with him on several capacity building and research projects; and he has always conducted himself with the utmost integrity. Emmanuel, you will be dearly missed! Continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord!
