Born on 12 May 1963, Dr Usen attended secondary school at St. Gregory’s College, Obalende in Lagos. From there, he studied fine art with a specialisation in sculpture at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. In 1988, he earned his Masters degree in fine art( sculpture) at the same institution and later gained a PhD at the University of Port Harcourt. A distinguished fellow of the SNA, Dr Uwa James Usen will be missed sorely by all those who loved him; students, colleagues and family alike. He was one of the few leaders who would call his followers, not because he needs them but because he feels they need him. I remember the last time you called. I never knew we would not have another chance to talk again. Journey well, Dr.

You lived and made your mark where you were planted by the Almighty God your creator. Today, your race is ran, your course is completed...its time to hear father say " WELCOME HOME MY FAITHFUL SON". Rest on and live for eternity without tears or pains but everlasting gain in Jesus name!

Death is inevitable because it is the vehicle through which we will exit this ephemeral world for a permanent realm. The sudden loss of a loved one to the phenomenon known as death could be very devastating. However, we have no armour to prevent it when death comes calling. It's still sound strange that Dr. Yes Use is no more but we are consoled with the believe that he has gone to rest.

Dr Uwa James Usen was an accomplished art administrator, sculptor, teacher, role model, and above all, a former president of the Society of Nigerian Artists. He will be sorely missed by the Society, and the visual arts community in Nigeria. Our prayers are with his family in this difficult period. May God give them the fortitude to bear this great loss.
