Deon Meiring

June 21, 1967 - October 4, 2019

Deon Meiring was a South African Industrial Psychologist and Professor of Industrial Psychology at the University of Pretoria. Before joining the University of Pretoria, he practised as a Senior Industrial Psychologist in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 19 years (1991–2010), where he focused on specialised selection and assessment practices. He was known for his work in industrial psychology and cross-cultural psychology in the workplace, with a focus on personnel psychology and assessment practice in multicultural settings. Prof Meiring is best known for his work on the South African Personality Inventory (SAPI) and his involvement with the Assessment Center Study Group (ASCG). In 2018 he received a special recognition award at the 38th Annual South African ACSG conference for his significant contributions to the science and practice of assessment centres in South Africa. Deon’s expertise as an industrial psychologist, researcher and cross-cultural practitioner made a considerable contribution to the field of psychology in South Africa. His professional contributions to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) in the USA, and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), ensured that his expertise and knowledge enhanced the profession. He has published more than 30 scientific articles and book chapters and has presented his research at local and international conferences. Prof Meiring also opened up the way for many students, colleagues and friends to better career opportunities as a mentor, supervisor and lecturer. He believed in the difference psychological research can make to the world; this was evident in how he coordinated the Master’s program in Industrial Psychology at the Department of Human Resource Management. He made an impact as a lecturer where he taught both the graduate (psychometrics) and postgraduate level (advance assessment practice. Deon’s expertise was sought at various tertiary institutions, such as supervision for students at the North-West University, Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria. Deon was an exceptional mentor who is evident in the more than 18 intern-psychologists who completed their internships in Industrial Psychology under his supervision. Deon established networks, developed people, connected industries and people across the world with each other. He was a forerunner and a visionary. Apart from his professional expertise, he was a friend to his colleagues, always authentic and enquiring about the wellbeing of others. His death is a huge loss and leaves a void that cannot be filled. “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” —Shannon L. Alder

Dear Deon, We cannot express how sad we feel about your sudden passing. We thought we would be growing old together (and perhaps once owning a vineyard like we joked about). You personified South Africa to us and its spirit. You introduced us to billtong, de Weskus, crayfish galore, springbok rugby, Pilanesberg, snoek on the braai, Koeksisters, Hartenberg en Beyerskloof. Thank you so much for all these beautiful memories and for your generosity and hospitality! After we had worked a whole Friday on a research project, I will never forget that you drove with your car the next day to the early miles of the Franschhoek pass to cheer me on when I was climbing it. This characterized you: you were always there to help and support people when they needed it. Every time I pass that specific spot on the Franschhoek pass now (near your favourite restaurant “La petite ferme") I see you standing there with your characteristic smile and witty eyes. It is difficult to imagine that now we will not be able to 'braai another snoek' or to enjoy biltong or springbok together. We thank you for being such a great man, and for being such a terrific friend and colleague! Thank you for your enthousiasm, for having been just who you were. Dear Ilse, Chloe and Kylie, Please accept our sincere condoleances. Our thoughts are with you. It is hard to find words. We wish that the love of Deon for you, will give you strength and courage to move on. Filip and Herlinde
