I first met Denis at the University of Illinois in 1985, when we were both post docs. We made fast friends. He was a huge help in my developing a research program that would actually get me a job. His ideas were so fresh and exacting, and it was largely through our many chats that I learned better what a good idea might be. I loved his way of thinking, which took full, creative advantage of his broad and deep fund of knowledge. And what a wonderful, subtle, inimitable, often rakish sense of humor he had (and that grin that came with it). Although we carved our careers on difference continents, we remained good friends. I am so very saddened by his untimely passing, this brilliant, kind man from Manchester.
