I was in high school when Gus and Jason took me out deep water fishing in Lake Ontario. The only other time I had done this was cod jigging in Newfoundland, and their reel set up was completely new to me. When one of the rods snapped back and indicated that there was a fish on, he told me to reel it in. It felt like I was hauling the lake bottom up and I couldn't manage it. Jason had a go at it, but it was ultimately Gus' brawn that got the fish into the boat. A few huge lake trout were caught that day and Gus knew that my grandfather had been a career fisherman in Newfoundland. He brought my grandfather one of the large lake trout that we caught that day, and my grandfather was delighted with the gift. Gus had never met my grandfather but knew what kind of gift he could bring to a retired fisherman. Thank you Gus for this memory. And thank you for allowing me to live in your home during those last few months in high school when I had nowhere else to go. You are a legend of a man and your heart was gold. I'm sorry I put that nick in your hunting knife and I respect your intelligence for knowing I did it. :)
