It’s with great sadness that we remember our colleague Clare Fearon, who died recently at home in Heaton. Clare had been part of Sociology at Newcastle for nearly fifteen years, making many contributions to our community. She joined us in 2011 to start a PhD after working as a school teacher. In 2020 Clare became a Lecturer in Sociology.
She was a first-rate teacher, a steadfast colleague, and a great support for our students. Most notably, she led our first-year introductory module The Sociological Imagination, helping students from a range of backgrounds to find their feet in their degree subject. As Chair of our Student Voice committee, Clare ran a forum that encouraged undergraduates to participate more fully and confidently in their programme. She was a supportive and patient personal tutor. Clare approached all these roles with grace, attentiveness and care. She was also a sophisticated social and cultural thinker. Clare’s PhD on offence, humour, identity and politics, awarded in 2015, is more relevant than ever today. She continued to be interested in issues related to language and representation in everyday life.
We have missed Clare’s quiet, calm and thoughtful presence in the months of her illness and since she retired in Spring this year. Our thoughts are with her partner, Geoff, and with family and friends who helped him look after Clare through difficult times. We will continue to miss her.
Please share your thoughts and memories of Clare in this book of condolences.
