Carl C. Anthony, architect, city planner, and leader in the environmental justice movement, who helped redefine the relationship between racial equity, regionalism, and the environment, passed away in Berkeley, Calif., on April 4, 2026. He was 87. His book, The Earth, The City, and the Hidden Narrative of Race, published in 2017, interweaves his personal experiences with the broader history of urban planning, racial equity, and environmental and social justice. Over a lifetime, he inspired city leaders and planners with the potential for new and just possibilities that advantage healthy communities and sustainable life systems in the environment. He was an educator and mentor to many.
