Arega was a senior and highly respected World Food Programme Policy Officer, bringing with him specialized expertise and wide experience in natural resource management and related topics.
Arega played a leadership role in the food for assets project known as “MERET” that won the prestigious “Land for Life Award” in 2019 by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Due to this, the Government of Ethiopia gave special gratitude to WFP for the support and commitment for several decades. Arega was the embodiment of the WFP MERET team and he committed his life to improving the land in Ethiopia; his achievement lives on in the land he helped save.”
Arega’s technical leadership role in the MERET project and his deep understanding of how to cultivate productive working relationships with government agencies were well-known across the organization. As a result, he completed a number of assignments outside Ethiopia, most recently in Lesotho. His passing will be deeply felt, not only here in Ethiopia, but globally.
Arega is survived by his spouse Birtukan Teferra, and children Beniyame, Eyobale, Thomas and Esterlin.
