Anne was born in Holland, MI to Edith and Mert de Velder, the youngest of three children. She went to Hope College in Michigan, and Columbia University in New York. She met her husband of 42 years, a dancer, John Dayger, in New York while working as a costume designer. Anne and John had one child, Catherine, and they travelled the world on tour with Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Anne, John, and Catherine moved to Holland, MI where they lived for 7 years until Anne was recruited by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. John and Anne moved to Champaign, where Anne headed the Costume Technology graduate program for 17 years. After retiring, Anne and John moved to Vancouver, WA to be closer to daughter Catherine, her husband Scot, and granddaughter Nova. Anne was an inspiration to me as a person who lived a life that I admired, with commitment and passion. Recently I was made aware that my friend and colleague Anne C de Velder passed away Oct 1st 2020. She had been suffering with cancer. I met her when I was the Production Stage Manager for the Lar Lubovitch. She was a formidable person of Dutch persuasion, she could be meticulous and did not suffer fools. Although she was very much a behind the scene force, her incredible talents always shone through even though she worked without needing recognition. Anne worked in a costume shop and when she worked in the Lubovitch office, she still kept up with her work in her home costume shop whenever she was needed. She had the title of company manager for the Lubovitch Company but she acted as accountant, road manager, wardrobe person and mother hen to a group of dancers and staff. She gave us written rules of road etiquette along with the touring itinerary. We toured in many different venues: Universities, Theaters Internationally and domestically, outdoor venues in Italy, South American and Mexico. John Dayger a dancer and sometime rehearsal director was married to Anne. We also traveled with their young daughter Catherine, just to add to Anne tasks. John, Anne, and Catherine were our touring family and much loved.

It is hard to imagine where I would be without Anne DeVelder. She was a force. Sometimes of good, sometimes of chaos. She could make me laugh with just a look. The look is something I think we all know, deep in our hearts. It's that sideways glance right before she says your name, an octave lower than usual. Where you know you done fucked up. Anne was instrumental in my education and growth as a technician, she made me strive to be better. Made me believe that I was already better, I just needed to "take the time and really look." I miss this woman terribly. I'm glad she got to actually be retired for a few years, I'm glad she got to see her grandkid, I'm glad she didn't die while working 80 hours in a basement. But I am incredibly sad that I don't get to call her anymore to shoot the shit, to find out what new trouble John and the dogs got into. Thank you, you lovely and terrible woman, for making me stronger. For filling me with as much knowledge as possible, and giving me the strength to "look someone in the eye and tell them where to stick it." I wish I had a picture of her glaring at me with her tongue out as she blew a raspberry to flip me off, but this shot will have to do.

My Aunt Anne was a very special lady! She was crazy smart and honestly could do anything.! Some of my favorite memories when I was young was being able to go watch John dance. Anne was always there organizing everyone and everything and would have of course made all of the elaborate costumes. We would get to go out to eat after which I always loved. I will never forget the celebration party we had for my sister Kate and her husband Paul when they got married. Anne and John were instrumental in creating a lovely food spread and presents that was truly special and we had such a great time! Anne was very artistic and she would come up with the most amazing presents. I still have the sweet baby quilts that Anne and John made for my twins and the adorable bridesmaid dress for Anne Marie with such a pretty flower ribbon sash. Conversations were great! I can remember our dinner in Chicago several years ago, at a fancy hotel, with John eating some dish I had never heard of. Anne has am amazing memory and was telling stories, some with those answers from the past that I was always curious about. She always talked about Cat and her adventures in school and her hikes with Scot. I am so happy that John, Cat, and Scot have such wonderful memories and can tell stories to Nova .....Anne style. Anne was genuine and honest and her very special talents have been an inspiration to so many. She has made such a difference in so many people's lives and we will miss her so much.

So many great memories with Aunt Anne...Christmas at Grandpa and Grandmas with a fancy Christmas dinner while hearing about Anne and Johns wonderful stories and travels...Christmas in NYC while staying in Greenwich Village and touring all the recommended stops with Anne, John and Aunt Mary and dinner in Jersey City at Anne and John quaint brownstone,...Ringing Brothers circus! Oh so amazing...and best of all seeing Uncle John dance with the most amazing costumes by Aunt Anne. You will be missed...your wisdom and observations on life and family will be In our hearts Love David and family

I, Cat's mother-in-law, am so grateful that I got to know Anne and that she got to know Nova. I'll always remember her as tenacious, wicked smart, hilarious, compassionate, courageous, a meticulous seamstress, wonderful storyteller (what amazing life stories!), hard worker and voracious reader, someone who loved deeply and suffered no fools. I always trusted her to be exactly who she was, and felt safe opening my heart to her. Her beloved Cat surely inherited many of these fine qualities - she was so very proud of Cat and loved her so dearly. I'll always admire Anne showing up for outings, despite her pain and mobility challenges. She was a trooper. Among her many legacies for the family will be the incredibly intricate kilts she made for Scot, Brit and George for Scot and Cat's wedding. Personally, I'll always cherish the needlepoint pillow she made for me one Christmas. I'll always be grateful that she honored (humored) me, the insufferable photographer, with a few smiles despite hating to have her picture taken, a great gift! I'd also like to shout out to John, her faithful companion and caregiver - always by her side with a smile and quip. We will speak of her often to Nova, that she will know the strength and character that is her inheritance. Blessed be Anne, Rest in Peace and Power. Your memory will be a blessing to us.

I remember back in the late 70's early 80's (I think) how thrilled I was to get to go to the Ringling Brothers Circus with the King Neptune theme. Aunt Anne was a designer for the costumes and they were the most amazing and creative I had ever seen. I loved hearing Anne’s stories about her and John touring in Europe with young Cat in tow, adventuring in Paris, and talking about her work at the University of Illinois, her grad students and how much she cared about them. She was warm and funny but I also loved her acerbic wit and take-no-crap attitude. I’ll always remember how she glowed with pride at Cat and Scot’s wedding. At one point during the wedding rehearsal as we were all trying to organize the next day’s flow, she pulled me aside and thanked me, and when I asked what for she said, “Just for being you.” I was so moved, it was just one of those moments that you keep with you, that feeling of being *seen* by someone I admired so much. She was a great lady and she is missed, but she will be remembered with so much love.

I remember visiting Aunt Anne and Uncle John in their apartment in Manhattan, I believe Catherine was a baby, and Anne taught me how to snap green beans as I helped her make dinner. I believe I was either a tween or young teen at the time. I always remember that day whenever I cook green beans.
