I am shocked and very saddened to learn about Amrapali's sudden and unexpected passing. My heartfelt condolences to her family. I met Amrapali at Stanford when she joined some of our hiking outings. I can honestly say that I've rarely met someone with so much joy, happiness, and enthusiasm for life and everything it has to offer. Every time I saw Amrapali (she worked next door), she couldn't contain her big smile and I was greeted by an enthusiastic "Hi Merle". She would enthusiastically tell me about her research, her travels, the time she spent in my native Germany. She was sad she had to leave California, but couldn't contain her excitement to live in and explore the Netherlands. What a loss!
