Alioune Badiane

September 27, 1954 - July 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the demise of Dr. Alioune Badiane on 31 July 2020 in Dakar, Senegal after a short illness. Alioune retired in 2016 after serving for over 25 years in UN-Habitat. While at UN-Habitat, Alioune served as Chief Technical Adviser, Regional Coordinator for the Urban Management Programme and Director for the Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director for the Programme Division. His sudden death has come as a shock to UN-Habitat and also to many in the international development community who knew and worked with him. His service, dedication and leadership not only strengthened this UN-Habitat’s programme of work, but also left an indelible impact in the lives of people within and beyond UN-Habitat. We all remember how gallantly he always fought for UN-Habitat during the sessions of the Executive Board, especially during the 29 June 2020. UN-Habitat has lost a true friend. May Alioune’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Dear Alioune, You will be missed so much my friend. Aside from your guidance and leadership, you always had time for each of us personally. Professionally we held you in high esteem. Privately your were gracious and kind. I will never forget the way you helped me in the old days when you were in UMP and I was having problem with immigration on entering Ghana. You stared at the immigration officer and said " why are you not assisting our brother, he has come to Ghana to help us" At which point the humbled officer stamped the passport and we proceeded. I am sure we all have stories like this. You were one of our staff who was the beating heart of UNHABITAT. May God rest your sole and protect those nearest and dearest to you. We pray for your family at this sad time. Farewell my friend you giant of a man! Graham
