I have been shocked by the very sad news of Alioune’s sudden death, as I understand of Covid-19, in Dakar, Senegal. Ever since we co-operated in the Urban Management Programme during 1993-1996, Alioune has been a steady and close friend. Although we did not meet in person after his retirement from UN-Habitat, we were in frequent contact. I was shocked to learn of his completely unexpected death this morning. He was a wonderful friend and colleague. We were professional partners in crime, and to lose such a partner is disastrous. I will miss his warm and charming personality and his booming laughter. In this sudden bereavement the thoughts of my wife Madeleen and me go out to his wife and children.
