So sad to hear of Alan’s passing. I remember with fondness his weekend revision courses where he would weave in personal tales, particularly of his life in Africa, to illustrate learning points and make these memorable and colourful. He knew exactly what it took to get his students through their exams, without (as he opened with) telling them how to do their day jobs. I owe Alan my formal entry into the governance profession, along with so many others that he helped enormously at different stages of their careers. Rest in peace Alan.
